Super Bowl Super Spots
This year marks Super Bowl 50! No doubt viewers will be on the edge of their seats as Peyton Manning and the Broncos battle it out with Cam Newton and the Panthers. But don’t forget the second star of the game—the commercials!
This year, Ad Age selected the best of the Big Game spots over its 50-year history. Think back to Apple’s “1984.” A woman in red jogging shorts and white t-shirt hurls a sledgehammer into huge screen, as the voiceover intones, “On January 24th, Apple Computer introduces Macintosh. And you’ll see why 1984, won’t be like 1984.”
Or how about Wendy’s classic commercial, featuring Clara Peller? As all three women stare at a huge bun, one carefully lifts the top to reveal a skimpy little hamburger patty with pickles, and Clara yells, “Where’s the beef!” These are a few of the spots that have endured in the creative consciousness long after the final flag of the game went down.
This year’s group of spots promises to be one of the best viewers have seen in some time. How about Honda’s “Singing Sheep?” Or there’s Heinz’s “Hot Dog Stampede.” And winner of this year’s “Small Business Big Game” contest to win a spot in the Super Bowl, Death Wish Coffee. Be sure and tune in to cast your vote for your favorite spots.
