Meet Chris Matthews
He’s a Chattanooga native. Wanted to be Batman or Indiana Jones as a child. Played “every sport” in High School. Enjoys physical and mental challenges—the opportunity to grow and overcome. Chris also loves outdoor adventure activities such as rock climbing, rucking, and camping. “I just like doing hard things,” he says.
Chris left his hometown to study Communications and Marketing at Samford University in Alabama. This is where he first cut his teeth on market analysis, consumer research, and persuasive writing. Initially aiming to study business, he struggled with economics but now laughs, “It’s funny looking back because I love the economics stuff these days. I live in spreadsheets!”
After University, Chris found his way to the ad biz. Got his start selling TV, radio, and digital spots before receiving a job offer from The Academy of Marketing in Atlanta. There he specialized in strategic thinking around marketing, consumer acquisition, and customer journey work. Full funnel side of things. He honed his technical skills through research on placements and demographic targeting. Picked up sales by studying the calls of the sales team.
Chris’s lifelong passion for Olympic and powerlifting, combined with his grit and entrepreneurial spirit, led him to launch a protein-based coffee business. He worked tirelessly—from couch surfing while traveling to local gyms and supplement shops to negotiating distribution deals with major backers—building the business from the ground up. Just as he reached peak success, COVID-19 shut down operations overnight.
Always steady and resilient, Chris pursued COVID relief funding from the state of Tennessee. Although he ultimately decided to close shop, his determination impressed state officials. In recognition of his efforts, Tennessee offered him an opportunity to consult for clients on its behalf. Ecommerce, digital marketing, creative strategy—you name it. His natural talent and perseverance helped businesses across various industries weather the pandemic.
Seeking new challenges, Chris began applying to regional agencies and found his way to Maycreate, eager to tackle obstacles and drive success for clients. “I like big challenges. I enjoy the strategy and the thought behind marketing and advertising.” Recognizing Chris’s entrepreneurial spirit and diverse skill set, Brian May invited him to join the team as Digital Marketing Manager.
Dogs may learn new tricks, but old habits die hard. “There’s a lot of opportunity to consult with our clients at Maycreate, helping them raise the bar in numerous ways and improve their businesses.” Chris jokes, “I don’t know how to not raise the bar.” He’ll certainly have the chance to elevate our clients—something we strive for daily at Maycreate. Welcome to the team, Chris!
